Jenna Appling –
Thank you for taking the time to visit my website. I am blessed to be able to say that I truly love my career in child and family therapy.
From a young age, I knew that my passion was helping children by being a safe and supportive person for them through difficult times. I did not know exactly what that would look like. Would I be a school teacher or a school counselor? Would I open a day care? While earning my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at Seattle University, I completed a Family Studies class and quickly realized that in order to help children, I needed to help with child and family therapy.
In 2007 went on to pursue my Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. I have developed a passion for helping youth who have experienced trauma. I was trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and began helping clients learn skills to empower themselves in taking control over their trauma instead of the other way around.
Since completing my Master’s Degree in 2008, I have continued to work with youth in King County, specializing in child trauma, anxiety, depression and attachment. In 2010, I was trained in Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) and began helping to facilitate a deeper bond between parents and their young children using parent child interaction therapy, while coaching parents on managing difficult behaviors. I have witnessed this type of treatment transform parent-child relationships from a child sitting across the table and barely talking to sitting in the parent’s lap full of laughter! Throughout my practice, I have worked with a large number of teenage girls who struggle with regulating their emotions while navigating life as a teenager. I developed a therapy group on Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT), which has become extremely successful and shown proven results in helping these girls reduce their anxiety, depression and self-harming behaviors.
As my practice has grown, I have encountered more and more teens (and adults) whom experience co-occurring disorders. They self-medicate their depression or anxiety with drugs or alcohol. I realized I was struggling to connect with them because my skills were lacking in fully understanding their substance use. In 2013, I became a Chemical Dependency Professional. I now feel better equipped helping people with both mental illness and substance use concerns.
I also enjoy helping students and those newer in the profession in finding their passions. In 2013, I became a Washington State Approved Supervisor available to provide supervision to graduate students.
My role as your therapist is to help you and/or your child find your true potential and then exceed it! I look forward to working with you, your child and your family!
